a1... doing good... stopping... well..., observing the mind well, stopping arrogance well, ... stopping ignorance:
a2This is good. Thus are to be named the seventeen things.
a2+Know you the twenty four signs on the human form.
a3You will bring things to him, great king, in the whole place (?), killer by yakṣas (?)...
a4... says... ... or says: Finally that is able to be done.
a4+Through the dangers of a wish for a manifest thing....
a5... honors... Strikes him with his sight (?) If he meets him, he is not glad and he hides the thing in secret.
a5+Of this (matter)... to another...
a6He is happy about reproaching him, dejected by his gain. He praises him publicly, otherwise he reproaches him.
a7... praises his enemies... He denies his wisdom. He is not happy about (his) wealth.
a7+Joyous about (his) poverty...
b1... "he would indeed happily obtain..." This is (his) thought. Whoever has the signs, every one of them...
b2... is to be avoided... The king said: I have come upon a difficult obstacle. I cannot turn you into a great sage...
b3... said to him: Know the twenty difficult things: Impetuosity is difficult to augment with a powerful one (?)
b4... conquering him is difficult. It is difficult to achieve a different state of existence (?) and achieve happiness.
b4+... unheard... is difficult...
b5It is difficult to find a diligent (?) and clever maid and to find peace.
b5+If (?) one goes to war without a weapon...
b6It is difficult to remove doubt: "Worship of Pretas is bad!" (?) Whoever becomes a monk without pleasure, monkhood is difficult for him.
b7... of the man. ... it is difficult for a poor person to live life. It is difficult (to be) greedy without refuge (?)...

Other

a5If he meets him, he is not glad and he hides the thing in secret. (Peyrot 2013b: 700)
a6+Er lobt ihn vor Augen, anderswo [aber] spricht er Tadel über ihn ..., er lobt seine Feinde, sein Wissen leugnet er ab [und] freut sich nicht über [seinen] Besitz. (Schmidt 1974: 441-2)

Commentary

Remarks

On IDP, recto and verso are reversed.

Linguistic commentary

n2eṅwi for eṅkwi.

Philological commentary

n1Judging from THT 127 b5 (mapi , mārsat te), mapi could also mean "not", in our case: "... may he not happily obtain..."
