Translation

a1... or he pushes him (from) great... Or he (pushes) him from great difficulty...
a2Or he sends him a crutch...
a2+Finally, he makes an effort to kill an embryo (lit. the one having entered the womb), having already entered the belly of the mother, having received two senses, the bodily sense and the life sense:n2
a4+If it (the child) attains death through his effort, he is no longer a monk.
a5+Neither having exerted himself, nor being a son of the Śākyas, he has fallen from monkhood.
a6+Anywhere, he is not to beg (?) for the whole duration of his life.
a7+How is it possible to be silent about (?) a place... power in this way (?).
a8If you do not transgress, speak when you are asked!
a8+Thus, the Buddha, god of gods, condemned lying numberless (times).
a9+He praised turning (away) from lying...
a10Ultimately, one should not tell a lie even jokingly. How much less (maliciously)!
b1+A monk who, not having attained the slightest distinction of noble ones, (desires?) the touch of bliss: "I know" or thus: "I see" or thus: "I am an Arhant", "I am an Anāgāmin striving for Arhant-rank", "I am a Sakṛtāgāmin striving for Anāgāmin-rank", "I am a Srotāpanna striving for Sakṛtāgāmin-rank", or "I am one who has attained (?) striving for Srotāpanna-rank", "I have evoked the first meditation, the second meditation, the third meditation, the fourth meditation, and friendship, compassion, happiness, patience, the stage of the infinity of space, the stage of infinity of consciousness, the stage of nothingness, the stage of neither consciousness nor unconsciousness, Aśubha-meditation, deliberate breathing", "The gods come to see me, the Nāgas, Yakṣas, Pretas, Kumbhāṇḍas..." ...

Other

a1+... oder sie [scil. die Lüge] bew(ahrt ihn) vor großer Schwierigkeit oder sendet ihm in (schwieriger Lage) eine Krücke entgegen. (Schmidt 1974: 512)
a4+If by his effort it attains death, he is no longer a monk. (Peyrot 2013b: 334)
a8If you are asked whether you don't transgress, say [so]. (Peyrot 2013b: 700)

Commentary

Remarks

In general, this manuscript is written in the standard script type, but it still shows an archaic-shaped 〈ṣa〉 (cf. Malzahn 2007a: 264).

Philological commentary

n1postäñe rano keriyemane waiyke mā weṣṣälle: cf. THT 1103 a4.
n2This passage is evidently about abortion. The Vinayavibhaṅga, Pārājika-Dharma 3 has a similar passage. There is some confusion among philologists since this leaf also mentions a prohibition against lying, which has a parallel in Pār. 4. This just means that, in addition to the Tocharian translation of the Vinayavibhanga being very loose, the structuring of the Tocharian text does not strictly adhere to the original.
