Translation
(continues from A 16)
a1 | he who was Śilpavān is [now] to be known as Aniruddha. |
---|---|
a1+ | He who was Prajñavān, is now to be known as Śāriputra. |
a2 | He who at that time was Puṇyavān, I was he. |
a2+ | Also at that time by the power of virtue I surpassed all other beings, and without effort reached royal dignity. |
a3+ | Even now, by the power of virtue I sit upon the diamond throne, I have [also], without effort, defeated the army of the god Māra [consisting] of 36 times 10 million family members, and the dignity of the king of the world, the unsurpassable, perfect Buddhahood, ruling all dharmas, I have reached. |
a5 | || In the H.-tune: || |
a5+ | through virtue (beauty) is fine to look at; |
a6 | through virtue the craft of the beings is lovely to look at; |
a6+ | through the foundation of virtue, unch(ecked shines) (wis)dom; |
b1 | through the power of virtue, energy does not weaken. Through virtue the sun defeats the moon in the airspace; |
b2 | by merits the moon surpasses the stars and the planets; he who possesses virtue, this one owns the goods of happiness; |
b2+ | through virtue the venerated Buddha is powerful. |
b3 | Therefore the veneration of the Buddha shall ever be carried out by the wise one; |
b4 | incessantly the energetic ones shall strive to carry out veneration of the Buddha; at the Buddha, the master, the skilled one shall direct veneration; |
b4+ | the handsome one should not tire of homages to the Buddha. |
b5 | In this way wisdom without virtue does not shine, |
b5+ | or rather, only together they are especially bright. |
b6 | Therefore they are themselves called Sambhāras. These two Sambhāras’ (six) |

Other
(Schmidt 1974: 337) |
Commentary
Remarks
Transcription and translation are based on Carling et al. 2009. | |
Transcription and references have been transferred from the "Text and Reference Database of the Tocharian A Language" (Gerd Carling Lund University) (funded by the Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation and SCAS). | |
The leaf number on the margin has been lost, but traces of a number 7(·) (for 72?) is written inside the string hole of the verso side by a different hand. Since this leaf stands in a continuous series, it actually ought to have the leaf number 81. The combination of lost margin and deviating string-hole numbering starts in A 15 and continues until A 24. |
Philological commentary
The translation is largely based on Sieg 1944: 20-21, and Carling et al. 2009. | |
n1 | The tune has 4x12 syllables, rhythm 5/7. |
n2 | i.e. the Buddha derives his power from virtues. |
