Translation
(continues from A 23)
a1 | ... What do I do? |
---|---|
a1+ | ... (Immediately on Bṛhaddyuti), upon testifying to the great delight in the splendour of the Buddha, the master, and upon the making of powerful..., on his hands dryness and coldness disappeared; |
a2+ | like a thread (?) of silk (a pair of hands), soft, tender, were visible to him. |
a3+ | When he saw this, in Bṛhaddyuti, the potter, as in a Cakravartin-king, a great joy arose in his mind, |
a4+ | and overwhelmed by the power of this joy, to the Buddha, the master... |
a5 | ... he poured water over his Buddha-like body, and ... |
a5+ | ... (radiance) went out from the 80,000 pores of Śā(kyamuni), |
a6 | the body of Bṛhadyuti began to do reverence to the right. |
a6+ | || (In the ?-tune: ||) |
b1 | ... thunderbolt, kāṅkuk, śrīvatsa and gleaming signs going (from the body of) the Buddha to the body (of Bṛhaddyuti). |
b1+ | going (from the body of) the Buddha to the body (of Bṛhaddyuti). |
b2 | [And] a very strong wish arose in him for the rank of Buddha. |
b2+ | Then after Bṛhaddyuti had rendered the service (of bathing) to the Buddha Śākyamuni, and had recognized the Buddha, the master, as accepting the same and acknowledging it favourably, with his whole body he fell on his belly in front of the Buddha the teacher, and (expressing) [his] wish, great beyond measure, for Buddha-hood (he says:) |
b5 | || In the W.-tune: || |
b5+ | By this good service, by this ... may this wish be fulfilled for me, |
b6 | (I want to be a teacher (?)) in the world. I want to be everyone’s protection in just such years, in just such |

Other
(Schmidt 1974: 101) |
Commentary
Remarks
Transcription and translation are based on Carling et al. 2009. | |
Transcription and references have been transferred from the "Text and Reference Database of the Tocharian A Language" (Gerd Carling Lund University) (funded by the Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation and SCAS). | |
The leaf number on the margin has been lost, but a number 78 (sic!) is written inside the string hole of the verso side by a different hand. Since this leaf stands in a continuous series, it actually ought to have the leaf number 88. The combination of lost margin and deviating string-hole numbering starts in A 15 and continues until this leaf. |
Philological commentary
The translation is largely based on Sieg 1944: 28-29, and Carling et al. 2009. | |
n1 | The tune which begins in this line has 4x12 syllables, rhythm 4/4/4. Its name and first verse, however, are almost entirely lost. |
