a1 (but he does not do it and) he takes (no) measure to do (it). [22a]
a2 (... the doing of things,) [23a] the mind [is] the best, (the mind comes first.) ... [23b]
a3 (Thereupon the suffering follows him in the rebirths), [24a] the wheel (of the deed), the cutting one (rises up). [24b] ...
a4 (But which is the deed which has been done and at the same time accumulated? [25a] It is this) deed (which has been done) here (after having) thought of ... [25d]
a5 (But which is the deed which has not been done and not accumulated?) [26a] [It is this deed] which has been done unintentionally. [26b] ... [26d]
a6 (Some beings) having been (happy here previously indeed) ... [1a]
b1 (... I will tell the way. Listen attentively! [1b] Here some beings ...) they seize possession. [1c] (... But afterwards they are full of remorse.) [1d]
b2 (But these beings ...) are born (in a rich house ... [2a] ... they obtain the possessions and everything pleasant.) [2b]
b3 ... they become deprived of ... [2c] (... first happy, he feels suffering afterwards.) [2d]
b4 (But which is the deed by which the beings after having) been (full of suffering first,) afterwards (become happy?) [3a] (... they begin to speak loudly, but they hold on [to it = the gift] even under pain,) [3b]
b5 (while giving the gift ...) they can for sure ... [3c] (... they do not feel remorse, they become joyful.) [3d]
b6 ... they (hold?) [their] possessions ... [4a]

Parallel texts

THT 521; Mahākarmavibhaṅga §§ 24-26 (Lévi 1932: 48, 121-122) (until a6); Mahākarmavibhaṅga §§ 33-34 (Lévi 1932: 65-66, 132-133) (from a6 onwards)

Philological commentary

The text is completed with the help of the partially parallel manuscript THT 521. In the first part the meter is the same as in PK AS 7C (4 x 12 = 5/7), after stanza 26 the meter changes to 4 x 25 (5/5/8/7), cf. the meter name bahudantākne in THT 521 a 5.
n2 Note that in the pāda 3b Sieg 1938: 19 proposed to restore aiskenträ ‘they give’ before kauc, but the context rather seems to imply a public pledge which is contradicted by the actual behavior.

Leaf PK AS 7C immediately precedes this fragment.

Linguistic commentary

n1 The restoration pälskosa by Sieg 1938: 14 (which would, by the way, be an archaic form) cannot be correct since the sign ‹sa› is part of a ligatura. Therefore a restoration to the absolutive pälskormeṃ is more likely.
