Translation

(continues from YQ III.7)

a1+ I also, oh Ānanda, am of great importance beyond any doubt (?) for the Gautamid queen.
a2 ... I nursed her (Law-)body.
a2+ She ... me from early childhood in every way ...
a3 ... I dressed her with garments.
a3+ She (adorned) me with the ornaments of the world, ...
a4 ... I adorned her. She fed me with all kinds of food that had to be turned into bite-size pieces;
a4+ I (also) ...
a5 She washed me with waters of the world;
a5+ but I (washed) her with the noble eightfold ...
a6 ... I (removed) the stain of the eighty-eight Kleśas, and in the same way I freed her from the continuity.
a6+ She (decorated) me (with flowers) of the world ...
a7 ... I decorated and adorned her with (flowers) ... || There are no two sides of it, Ānanda.
a7+ Of the advantage of the Law ... to make.
a8+ Therefore, oh Ānanda, should this jewel of a cloth (be given) by Gautamī to the Community.
b1 ... also the Community.
b1+ || There are, oh Ānanda, seven kinds of Saṃghālambana.
b2 ...
b2 ... (What) then are these seven Saṃghālambana?
b2+ || The Buddha-god the teacher ...
b3 ... a gift given to the Community is called a Saṃghālambana.
b3+ || The Buddha-god in the lead ...is called a Saṃghālambana.
b4 ...
b4+ || A gift given to the Community of monks indeed (is called a Saṃghālambana.)
b5 ... given ... is called a Saṃghālambana.
b5+ || With an undivided mind, ... (of a monk) ...
b6 (if ...) one behaves correctly ..., it is called a Saṃghālambana.
b6+ || Of nuns ... (if ...) to the best of their capacity they behave correctly towards them,
b7+ (it is called) a Saṃghālambana.
b8 (If there are honored) those who wear the monk's robe around their neck, and among them there are after all pious beings, (it is called a) Saṃghālambana.

Commentary

Linguistic commentary

The commentary is adapted from Ji et al. 1998: 180.
n6 For oktuk okät pi cf. MaitrHami 3, 8 a8-9: säkiz on artuqï säkiz.
n7 mā täm wäśśi ānant: these four words have no parallel in the Uyghur text, see MaitrHami 3, 8 a13ff. The new form wäśśi is interpreted as an adjective derived from wäṣt- ‘twofold’, and meaning ‘having two sides’, hence ‘ambivalent, ambiguous’.

Parallel texts

MaitrHami 3, 7-8

Remarks

This fragment contains part of the third act of the Maitreyasamitināṭaka; an Uy. parallel is MaitrHami III, 7b24-8b16. See also Pinault 1999: 196-7.
This text is continued from YQ III.7 and continues on YQ III.9.
The translation and the following commentary are adapted from Ji et al. 1998: 180.

Philological commentary

n1 The beginning of this leaf corresponds to MaitrHami 3, 7 b24, and its end to 8 b16ff. In the Turfan version, only a few lines are left, cf. Tekin 1980: 69-70, Taf. 22; the recto and verso in Tekin’s edition are to be reversed.
n2 Cf. MaitrHami 3, 7 b28.
n3 Cf. MaitrHami 3, 7 b31 - 8 a2.
n4 Cf. MaitrHami 3, 8 a3-4.
n5 Cf. MaitrHami 3, 8 a6-8.
n8 Cf. MaitrHami 3, 8 a12-13.
n9 Cf. MaitrHami 3, 8 a19-20; TA pissaṅkaṃ kälko el ‘gift gone into the Community’ translates the term Skt. saṃghālambana- ‘supporting the Community’, but is closer in meaning to Pali saṃghagata-.
n10 The 1st kind of Saṃghālambana.
n11 The 2nd kind.
n12 The 3rd kind, cf. the end in MaitrHami 3, 8 b1.
n13 The 4th kind, cf. MaitrHami 3, 8 b2-4.
n14 The 5th kind, cf. MaitrHami 3, 8 b4-7.
n15 The 6th kind, cf. MaitrHami 3, 8 b7-12.
n16 The 7th kind, ending in YQ III.9: a1, cf. the somewhat different description in MaitrHami 3, 8 b12-17.
