Translation

a1 Oh venerable one! I have just spun myself (this) excellent, gold-colored cotton cloth.
a2 ... out of observance of proper behavior, you should accept (it) from me, you should put (it) on because of me, having recognized the love of a mother ...
a3 || Give it to the Community, Gautamī, a cotton cloth given by you to the Community
a4 ... To honor me together with the Community, if that is your choice, oh Gautamī. ... (to) the Community. ... great ...
a5 1. ||
a5+ Having heard that, queen Gautamī, ... precisely to the Buddha-god the teacher ...
a6 ... she says to the Buddha-god the teacher: || In the Kaṃtsakarṣaṃ [tune] ||
a6+ (I have) just (made) this gold-colored cotton cloth ...
a7 ...(accept it) from me, oh venerable one, fulfil my wish, put it on on my behalf! Show me compassion!
a7+ With fruit ...
a8 ... the power of (ignorance). If the Gautamī queen would be as knowledgeable as I am, ...
b1 ... in (the Saṃsāra) of the world a great loss will occur when...
b2 ... should have been given to the Community. What problem is there with the cotton cloth?
b2+ Then the Buddha-god the teacher (says) for the third time:
b3+ (If,) oh Gautamī, (the cotton cloth is) given by you to the Community, I as well as the Community will be honored.
b4 ... having become ... with tears in her eyes, (she) looks at the venerable Ānanda.
b4+ || Then, .. with palms put together, he says to the Buddha-god the teacher:
b5 .
b5+ Of great importance, oh venerable one, to you, is Gautamī.
b6 ... with the milk of her breast she has nursed you and brought you up.
b6+ Therefore, for the love of your mother ...
b7 the Buddha-god the teacher says:
b7+ Indeed in the very same way, Ānanda, is Gautamī of great importance to me.
b8 ... (as I was wretched), with the milk of her breast did she nurse this my body.

Other

a2 You should accept [it] from me, you should put [it] on because of me, having recognised the love of a mother. (173) (Peyrot 2013c: 241)
a4 To honour me together with the community, if that is your choice, o Gautamī. (173) (Peyrot 2013c: 648)

Commentary

Linguistic commentary

The commentary is adapted from Ji et al. 1998: 174.
n7 The sequence teṣi ṣñi kapśi is obscure as to its segmentation and meaning.
n9 TA trityo ‘for the third time’ differs from the restored OT ikinti 'second' in MaitrHami 3, 7 a31.

Parallel texts

MaitrHami 3, 7

Remarks

This fragment contains part of the third act of the Maitreyasamitināṭaka; an Uy. parallel is MaitrHami III, 7a5-b22. See also Pinault 1999a: 196-7.
The text continues on YQ III.8.
The translation and the following commentary are adapted from Ji et al. 1998: 174.

Philological commentary

n1 The beginning of this leaf corresponds to MaitrHami 3, 7 a5ff., and its end to 7 b21ff.
n2 Cf. MaitrHami 3, 7 a8-9.
n3 Now the Buddha replies to the queen Gautanit, cf. MaitrHami 3, 7 a11-15, the text of which is slightly different.
n4 Cf. MaitrHami 3, 7 a16ff.
n5 kaṃtsakarṣnaṃ: a stanza of 4 x 12 (5/7) syllables.
n6 Cf. MaitrHami 3, 7 a22-24; the Buddha is speaking.
n8 After this line, the Uyghur text is badly damaged, and cannot help the interpretation.
n10 Cf. MaitrHami 3, 7 b5-7.
n11 Ānanda is speaking, cf. MaitrHami 3, 7 b11ff.
n12 Cf. MaitrHami 3, 7 b17.
