Translation

a1 out of compassion. When ... come to you ...
a2 if he asks you, then you shall say the following to this: from the desire
a3 ... Then the Buddha spoke the strophe in the assembly ...
a4 (whose) spirit [is] always (unrestrained) here, one whose (course) is directed upwards [he will] (be called)
a5 and a monk [that had/has been] living/staying in the Jetavana earlier
a6 (the law). [Even] I [myself] would like to grasp only in brief, directed at the one goal ..
a7 That which [is] coarse here: gravel, dirt or stones ...
a8 the good (deeds) in (mind), body and words ...
b1 for, if like gold [is] your mind, without ...
b2 shall (blow away?) the dirt of the (own) self. This the (man) grasped ...
b3 (to his own (?) best). There first step by step (in the Kausala-countries) ...
b4 ... came at that time ...
b5 ... (such) sufferings [of his] self ...
b6 delivered from all such sufferings. To him the Buddha spoke ...
b7 the haze [has been] driven away by me, therefore I now sit ...
b8 the one having the (ten) powers ... he heard the law [and] obtained ...

Philological commentary

Kāmavarga (II), part 1. Due to the loss of two thirds of the leaf as well as all strophe numbering, the coherence of the text has suffered badly and so has the translation’s. The metre is 4x13 + 21 syllables in a 5/8 and 8/8/5 rhythm, but it is impossible to define individual verses with any certainty.

n2 Emendation according to Sieg and Siegling 1983: 151.
n3 Emendation according to Sieg and Siegling 1983: 31 fn. 1.
n4 Emendation according to Sieg and Siegling 1983: 31 fn. 2.
n5 Emendation according to Sieg and Siegling 1983: 31 fn. 3.

Remarks

The original manuscript is missing, but was the left hand side of leaf 30 to the schnurloch. About 3/4 of the leaf (of ca. 40 syllables) were missing for each line. The script was severely attrited in some places.
