Translation

a1Because of this, she was worried and remained seated. Then, Vyāsa (bowing with respect, says):
a2“... Give command to give (me) a (spade) and a basket! I shall (dig) the lady’s share of the ditch.”
a3She ordered [to give him these implements]. He carried this and went to dig the ditch. In [the tune] ṣeraśi‑ni(ṣkramāntaṃ):
a4He dug the earth (itself). They scratched in the trench with efforts. All beings
a5(stopped working). [...] The inhabitants of the country recognized the sage.
a6(The wish) arose (to the people): “He should not put a curse on our land!”
b1He [the king] went out of the city. He was going to the sage Vyāsa with his ministers.
b2“You are [a Brahmin / sage?]. You are not worthy of [doing] this work.”
b3... by you.” He also did not go away. He kept digging indeed face down.
b4Also, she, being afraid of the king, having mounted a splendid vehicle ...
b5“You (have done) an evil deed, Brahmin, because you did not execute the king’s command.”
b6“It is for your sake that this ground has been dug!” Speaking also in this way, this one [sage] did not come out, (having given up [his tools]) (?).

Other

a6Nicht soll er auf unser Land einen Fluch legen. (Schmidt 1974: 480)
