Commentary
Philological commentary
| This is probably a confession text referring to the first person and reporting about teachings in the past. |
| We seem to have a metre of seven- and eight-syllable verses. |
n1 | yel(·)ṣ(·)m can be restored to a 1.pl. Pt IV form yel(a)ṣ(a)m 'we made investigate' from the root yel- 'to investigate' (cf. wāltsaṣam 'we let ground (the grain)'; -ne then would be a locative. |
n2 | āñmalāṣṣän-ne is the only reasonable separation; it can be a 3.sg. verbal form of a verbal stem āñmalāsk- which ought to underlie the abstract añmalāṣṣälñe 'sympathy'. |
n3 | The word separation is unclear. |
n4 | The masculine obl. plural adjective kadaliṣṣeṃ most likely derives from a loan of Skt. kadāli- 'evil' Bechert and Waldschmidt 1973 II: 18a and 36b. It is probably connected with a substantive expressing a negative notion. |
