Commentary

Philological commentary

*Broomhead's classification as "Udānālaṅkāra" is probably based on a2, where a connection is made from strophes to an explanatory narrative. The metre is so far only found in the Anityavarga (THT 4 - THT 5) and in THT 49.
*Very probably 4 x 7+7: a1 – – /// -ne ka ṣp # te wāki : o – – /// a2 ·s· (t)säṅkau wñāwa ślokanmaṃts ārth ñke we- /// a3 # (ke)ktseñäś # tai menākäñc # rittäskau : wai- /// a4 kraupatsiś snai keś lkāskeṃ läklenta /// a5 (a)lyaik no # kraupnanträ # śānta kewaṃ # śaitsisa : lareṃ /// a6 – l··ṃ 51 tā tallauntsai # preścyaine päst # krentaṃtsä ā- /// [52a] 3 + 28 + 11 = 42 syll. missing b1 ·n· # c·rk·aträ 52 maṃtne wnolmi # totka kca # waipecce s· /// [53a] 3 + 28 + 7 = 38 syll. missing b2 # -ñ cew ārṣäṃ # waipecce 53 ontsoytñe tne # tanmäs(k)eṃ # /// [54a] 7 + 28 + 5 = 36 syll. missing b3 soyeṃ # waipeccenta # kälporsa 54 mä- /// [55a] b4 -tse : maṃt # kektseñe # wṣītsine # ok-tmane /// b5 -l(m)eṃtsa # laita ñakcye # śaiṣṣemeṃ : mā srukalyñ(e) /// b6 – – (a)llek ṣamāne pärskau räskre ///

Remarks

*According to Broomhead 1962: 177 "[w]ritten in medium ductus and clearly preserved, it is the left hand edge of a large six line MS."
