Philological commentary

n1The Tocharian translation does not correspond to the Sanskrit text, which is corrupt. The original passage refers to the three elements wind, bile, and phlegma that induce diseases. Each disease has an individual proper name and in addition a second name referring to the prevalence of symptoms that are characteristic of one of the three elements like Skt. vātaja- 'generated from wind'; see Filliozat 1948: 43-44. The Tocharian text, however, by itself transports the genuine sense, so that one may surmise it reflects an oral commentary transmitted independently of the written transmission.
n2Above the last akṣara of mamauñempa one sees a dot, which is a blotch rather than an anusvāra.
