Translation

a4... they will not be able to recognise the roots of merit ...
a6... There came a snake, fierce of venom ...
b5... in five hundred births you kill (each other).

Other

b5In fünfhundert Geburten tötet ihr euch gegenseitig. (Schmidt 1974: 321)

Commentary

Parallel texts

*THT 42

Remarks

*Lines b4–b6 correspond to THT 42 a1–a4 (see the translation there).
*According to Broomhead 1962: 176 "[w]ritten in medium ductus, and very clearly preserved, it is the left hand edge of a six line manuscript from the same Udānālaṅkāra manuscript as [ IOL Toch 136 ] in all probability."

Philological commentary

n1This is probably the beginning of the narrative passage about the snake, continued in THT 42 a1–6 (Sieg and Siegling 1949: II, 64).
