Remarks

The paper is severely damaged and the script is partly erased, esp. on the verso. To be judged from the script and the general disposition, this leaf belongs to a different manuscript than the other Araṇemijātaka pieces PK NS 36 and 20, PK NS 35, PK NS 36A and PK NS 699.

Philological commentary

n1Probably the small fragment PK NS 699 b 4 is a parallel, both have ammakki.
n2The Berlin parallel THT 85 a 5 seems to have the more consistent text in accordance with the Vedic ritual of giving water to honor a guest (cf. Mylius 1995: 34 s.v. argha-). Despite the discussion by Couvreur 1964: 240, fn. 13, the notion of "golden water" is not attested in Sanskrit. Therefore, the adjective golden rather is the epithet of the container of the gift water. This, of course, presupposes that here both versions differ. A theoretical possibilty to assume a common text would be to restore to ysā(r)ṣṣe "bloody" (water) – note that THT 85 a 5 can in theory also be read (ys)[ā]rṣṣe –, but this does not make sense here.
n4In contrast to Couvreur, who did not propose any reading for the very damaged first line, based on an autopsy and with the help of the parallel Berlin text THT 85, one can read (and restore) still many signs.

Linguistic commentary

n3The restoration (ñä)kte-yokäṃ is not completely certain but it makes good sense as transposition of Skt. deva-rūpa- "god-like".
n5Couvreur's restoration [ce]nä(n)ä(\) is not warranted, because fremdzeichen 〈na〉 is hardly ever used. Note that in the lacuna of the parallel text THT 85 b 4 there is not enough space for this form cenän, but only for ceṃ from the near-deictic demonstrative se. The use of the recognitional pronoun seṃ makes more sense in this context.
