Commentary
Philological commentary
| n1 | Ching segments this as wässintse ṣeṃ and considers this to be a loan word from chinese 衫 or 扇. However, in the case of 衫 one would expect ṣem, not ṣeṃ, and 扇 means 'leaf of a door' or 'fan', thus it would not be a good fit semantically. I consider this form a substantivization of an adjective *wässintseṣṣe, a -ṣṣe form of wässintse, itself a genitive hypostasis, meaning 'clothing, garments', which is attested in Ot 12 a8. The form might also occur in THT 2726 a1. |
|---|---|
| n2 | The scribe seems to have written 'ṅwā' first and shoddily added 'k' in afterwards. |
| n3 | This is probably the same word as in olākwāṃṣe in PK DA M 507.24. Ching 2017: 385 considers it to be the equivalent of chinese 乌骆馆, 馆 being a 'post station', which among other things collected taxes. |
| n4 | This is a very interesting construction. We have keś tättār, a nominalization of the phrase keś tā- 'judge, consider, weigh'. Then meñ seems to be the direct object of keś tättār, so 'the consideration of the month'. This in turn is adjectivized: 'pertaining to the consideration of the month' or more simply: 'pertaining to the month'. Thus we have: 'The coins pertaining to the month', i.e. the monthly amount. |
