Translation

a1 ... to gladden the senses...
a2+ ... in the end of the third... you (were) a boy named Saṃcite.
a3+ You saw the Buddha Tiṣya in the woods, wrapped in miraculous flames.
a4 You never forgot to observe (good behavior).
a4+ You praised him for seven days.
a5+ In one verse was your effort of nine kalpas fulfilled (?).
b1 I honor the power.
b1+ The virtue of gift-giving you were wishful to accomplish, oh Omniscient, oh Shelter and Refuge, Araṇemi by name, you were lord of the earth
b3 [and] loved the beings.
b4 (great [was your] abi)lity: your own name [= yourself], the queen [and your] children you surrendered to the Brahmins
b5 You tore down mount Sumer... ... honor...

Other

(Schmidt 1974: 311, 312)

Commentary

Philological commentary

The translation follows Schmidt 2001: 300.
This fragment and THT 296 obviously belong together. Note the confusion between ś and in this document: wantoś instead of wantoṣ in a3, śale instead of ṣale in b5. All in all, this and THT 296 seem to be philologically deviant.

Remarks

In one frame with THT 297.b and THT 297.c. The leaf is in portrait, not landscape format. However, just as with a poṭhī leaf, it is to be flipped horizontally, not vertically as with Old Uyghur or European style books. On IDP, recto and verso are reversed.
