Commentary

Derived from the attested (cf. Monier-Williams 1899: 396,2) Skt. name Citragupta, composed of Skt. citra- and gupta-, through a Middle-Indic intermediary, which is responsible for the weakening of the intervocalic stop. See also cinaupte for a detailed argumentation and bibliographic references.
