| Cf. the TA parallel A 342 a 3: tmäṣ (āmāśa)ñ kälycaṃ kāresyo tānaśolis yokmaṃc ṣtmoräṣ śla wäktasurñe lāntāc träṅk(iñc). The traditional translation [as per Sieg, followed by Schmidt, l.c.] is: "Thereupon (the ministers) standing with threatening (?) swords at the door of the Dānaśāla with deference spoke to the king". However, it is unlikely from the situation that the ministers here raise their weapons against the king; their rather deferential attitude is also clear from the Uyghur version. Therefore, both TB mälkā- oṅkor and TA kälycaṃ kāresyo must refer to hiding or sheathing their swords. Accordingly, TA kälyc is interpreted as either ‘sheath’ (thus Werner Winter) or ‘sleeve’ (G.-J. Pinault) apud Carling et al. 2009. The same is actually true for TB oṅkor. Note that later in the story in A 342 b 5, when the king has refused their request, they "lean on their swords" when asking him again to expell the Brahmin, which apparently is meant as a stronger threat than in this line. | |

Linguistic commentary
| (mā mäntana)tär-ñ is restored by Schmidt on the basis of the TA parallel mäntā /// in A 342 a 1. The form must be a present because we have an inhibitive imperative: "Stop scolding me!" Pace Malzahn 2010: 754, a 2pl.mid. Prs XII (mäntan)tär is not likely because one would have to assume a misspelling (mänta)tär. But note that mäntanatär would be the only Prs VI form with the meaning "to scold" (the only clear Prs VI attestation from this root means "to stir"). | |
| It is difficult to decide whether śle yärke is a bahuvrīhi ślé-yärke (cf. Bernhard 1958: 202f., who only lists undecidable cases for TB śle and TA śla) or a mistake. The TA parallel has a prepositional rendering śla wäktasurñe "with deference". |
