a1The saṅgha of ?-ṣkuneke honors the general Nāri. Lord, you yourself know this fully: you have the saṅgha of your own father...
a2Now, the saṅgha is growing. Likewise artisans are in the process of building balconies for the window of Śimprayen . They/we (?) are lacking grain. Now...
a3We have good zeal. Now we speak with trust to you: With a little grain you would be doing something excellent. In many other monasteries... excellence...
b1It is necessary for you to seek and ask for the happiness and suffering of the saṅghan . In the monastery made by Iśśapake, now with trust... good...
b2The final donation: ten piculs grain, so that it will be suitable here for the saṅgha to practice zeal and good morals in your power...
b3... will be made by you.

Commentary

Philological commentary

The transliteration has been taken from Ching 2017: 130f.
The transcription has been taken from Ching 2017: 130f.
I interpret ṣameṃ... laṃssenträ as a serial verb construction that adds progressive aspect. cf. Sanskrit, where the root sthā- can be used as 'Ausdruck der im Gange befindlichen Handlung' (Speijer 1896: 62). Śimpraye is almost certainly related to śimprāyai in Ot 12 a1. However, the relationship between the two forms and their meaning is unclear.
For ritatsi parktsi, cf. PK AS 8C a6 and PK NS 274. Collocation of rit- and pärk- seems to have been idiomatic.
