Commentary

Philological commentary

*The Sanskrit text on the fragments (from the Śikhālakasūtra) corresponds to sūtra 135 in the Chinese Madhyamāgama.
n1glosses Skt. surāpānam 'drinking liquor'. There seem to be no further traces after [y]o –. Although several Tocharian glosses on this fragment are deciphered by Schmidt (apud Wille 2008: 51), this gloss has been left unmentioned. As for the glosses deciphered, one of these is (b3) ānu po ok raṃtar\ 'übe das Aufhören, [und] du wirst alle acht aufgeben!' ['practice cessation [and] you will give up all eight [of them]!'] (found on the joined fragment SHT 1914). Unfortunately, Peyrot 2014: 159 cannot confirm Schmidt's reading; to him, this gloss is essentially illegible.
n2glosses Skt. (puru)[ṣ](aṃ) 'man' (Wille 2008: 50). The gloss is found on top of the akṣara ti of v4/b4 (dhva)ṃ(sa)ya[ṃ]ti, on a loose piece in the frame that directly joins the main fragment.

Remarks

*The small fragment (ya[ṃ]ti) belongs at the beginning of line r.1/a1 (or v.4/b4) of the large fragment. Belongs to the same leaf as SHT 1914.
