Commentary
Philological commentary
Comments from Filliozat 1948: b3: [to] is uncertain Exhaustive Note (p. 83 transl.): [a5]: puṣpa: an ulcerous disease of the eye [probably of the conjunctiva or the pupils]. Cf. Śārṅgadhārasaṃhitā, Utt.. XIII, 84: la puṣpavarti “poultice against puṣpa”, where is said māṃsavṛddhihṛt “which destroys growths of the flesh”. This interpretation seems to be confirmed by the fact that the same remedies are prescribed here against this disease and against inflammatory [or neoplasmic?] swelling at the root of the tongue. The dictionaries, sinse Wilson, translate puṣpa as “blindness/leucoma”, but the leucomas are less susceptibel than an inflammatory swelling to be influenced by medical treatment. | |
n1 | The "ṣa" in puṣne seems to be a "pa". However, a similar phenomenon occurs in the reading of piṣ/pitaka- W 19 b2, W 36 a4. |
n2 | Filliozat and Broomhead wi[su]mantä doesn't seem to be correct. In the first wisa mantä, the "sa" seems to have something below it, while the second obviously doesn't have anything. I assume that the sa in the first wisa mantä just has ink splotches below it. |
n3 | The Filliozat/Broomhead reading katu(karo)[hiṇi] is impossible, since "tu" is not written like here. It has to be ka or nu. Also, the first akṣara looks more like ra than ka. |
n4 | Filliozat/Broomhead mahiṣa is impossible. The i-diacritic of the alleged "hi" is attached on the top right, like is characteristic for ṇa. This never occurs on ha. Also, it is not entirely clear that the last akṣara in maṇiṣa should be read as ṣa. |
