a1... knows... Through obtainment, achievement, one has the attainment of the form. Through causes (hetu), one has so many causes (hetu) for the form.
a1+Through causes (pratyaya), through causality one has so many causes (pratyaya)) for the form.
a2Through the fruit, one has the fruit of the form.
a2+Through one's own sign and through the common sign, one knows.
a3+The meaning which "knowing, discerning, considering" (has): Like thought knows and discerns the form in eight ways, just so it knows, discerns and considers through the power of prajñā in eight categories each dharma in eight ways.
a5One who knows in this way is called a prajñin. What is thinking (vitarka)?
a5+Having as innate disposition the mind's coarseness, through the capacity of Vitarka the five Vijñānas will become gross.
b1The five [Skandhas], Rūpa etc., will be conceived as gross spheres.
b1+For the mind's coarseness Vitarka is the reason.
b2+Its second name is "connecting" (saṃkalpa), because the sign of activity in the five thoughts, most coarse in the five spheres, through connecting with its special sign (?) is called "connecting" (saṃkalpa).
b3+The perception (saṃjñā) sphere is understood as active, turning, caused by the wind (?) of perception (saṃjñā).
b4In this sphere vitarka thinks. Thus, in the activity of vitarka perception is its witness.
b4+The dharma that is the cause of the coarseness of the five kinds of knowledge is called vitarka.
b5Wat is deliberation (vicāra)? The fine nature of the thought.

Other

(Schmidt 1974: 241)
