History of the Tocharian Texts of the Pelliot Collection (HisTochText)

The project History of the Tocharian Texts of the Pelliot Collection (HisTochText), overseen by Georges-Jean Pinault and funded by an ERC Advanced Grant (788205), is operated by the École Pratique des Hautes Études. Its objective is to edit and analyze the Tocharian and Sanskrit materials within the Pelliot Collection ("fonds Pelliot") at the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF), utilizing all available methodologies, and to subsequently publish them on BnF Archives et manuscrits.

Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften (BBAW)

The majority of the manuscript fragments edited for our project are part of the Turfan Collection of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, the Tocharian part of which is kept in the Oriental Department of the Berlin State Library; the official designation is Depositum der Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften in der Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin – Preußischer Kulturbesitz, Orientabteilung.

Images of the Tocharian manuscripts are made available through the Digitales Turfan-Archiv II or International Dunhuang Project Berlin, and also through TITUS and IDP. A large number of manuscripts of the Turfan Collection in other languages are accessible through the images of the Digitales Turfan-Archiv I, and they are edited by the Turfanforschung research group.

The International Dunhuang Project (IDP) at the British Library

The International Dunhuang Project (IDP) at the British Library is an international online project aiming at providing information and images of all manuscripts and material culture from the archaeological sites of Dunhuang and the Eastern Silk Road. Images of almost all Tocharian manuscripts of the British collection are available, with preliminary transliterations, transcriptions and bibliographical references by Michaël Peyrot (2007) and Tatsushi Tamai (2006, 2007, 2009).

Thesaurus Indogermanischer Text- und Sprachmaterialien (TITUS)

The Tocharica section of this international online project providing texts and databases of many Indo-European languages offers photographs of almost all Tocharian manuscripts from the Berlin Turfan Collection. The part of the collection edited by Sieg and Siegling is provided with transliterations entered by Tatsushi Tamai and Katharina Kupfer and transcriptions by Christiane Schaefer. The unpublished part is provided with a preliminary transliteration by Tatsushi Tamai.

Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF)

A considerable portion of the manuscript fragments edited for our project are part of the Pelliot Koutchéen collection of the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF). Images of the Tocharian manuscripts are made available through the Digital Libraries Gallica hosted by the BnF. Some of these images are captured the other way round. We are providing the correct preview of these images and for now have to refer to the Pelliot Koutchéen section of Gallica for the enlarged view.

Die Legende vom Leben des Buddha in tocharischen Texten

The department for Comparative Indo-European Linguistics (CIEL) of the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich hosts an interdisciplinary project funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) about Tocharian texts containing information on the life of the Buddha.

Wissenschaftliche Bearbeitung der buddhistischen Höhlenmalereien in der Kuča-Region an der nördlichen Seidenstraße

This long-term project at the Academy in Leipzig aims at developing the world's largest centre for the study of Buddhist cave paintings of the Kucha region by making them accessible in their entirety for the religious, artistic and cultural studies of Buddhism and its spread to East Asia.

CeDICT: A Comprehensive e-Dictionary of Tocharian

The section of Linguistics and Phonetics in the Centre for Languages and Literature at Lund University hosts CeDICT: A Comprehensive e-Dictionary of Tocharian which aims at producing a comprehensive e-dictionary of Tocharian, including a Dictionary and Thesaurus of Tocharian A and an etymological Dictionary of Common Tocharian.

Douglas Q. Adams

Professor Adams kindly made available a scanned version of Wilhelm Siegling's personal and annotated copy of TochSprR(A). All these Tocharian A fragments, i.e. A 1–467, have a link to a scan of the respective page. We also like to thank the de Gruyter publishing house for their kind and fee-free permission to publish these scans on our website.

Gerd Carling

Professor Carling (Lund University) is working on an edition of Tocharian A texts within her project A Dictionary and Thesaurus of Tocharian A. This database has been merged with CEToM.

Adam Catt

Adam Catt (Kyoto University) is currently editing the Tocharian Abhidharma fragments for the CEToM project.

Athanaric Huard

Athanaric Huard (École Pratique des Hautes Études) is currently working on a complete catalogue of the manuscript fragments hosted at the Bibliothèque nationale de France and has kindly agreed to share his data with the CEToM project.

Thomas Oberlies

Professor Oberlies from the Seminar für Indologie und Tibetologie of the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen very kindly granted us access to the legacy of Emil Sieg and Wilhelm Siegling.

Georges-Jean Pinault

In cooperation with our project, Professor Pinault (École Pratique des Hautes Études, Paris; UMR Mondes iranien et indien) will present his edition of the still unpublished texts and a re-edition of the published texts from the Bibliothèque nationale de France (fonds Pelliot Koutchéen).

Christiane Schaefer

Dr. Schaefer (Uppsala University) is responsible for a Catalogue of Berlin manuscripts to be published in the series Verzeichnis der Orientalischen Handschriften in Deutschland, Vol. 41, Tocharische Handschriften.
