Commentary

Interpreted by Schmidt 1985b as a hybrid name composed of Skt. jina- 'victorious' or Cīna- (pl.) 'Chinese' and an iranian second part equated with middle Persian -uft < pati- 'lord'. But such an hybrid formation isn't very likely in regard to the Tocharian onomastic system. Thus, the explanation of the the second part by Pinault 2002b: 247-248 as a reflex of Skt. gutpa- gives a better sense : 'protected by the Conqueror (= the Buddha)'. The name was transmitted through a middle Indian intermediary and the intervocalic stop was weakened, which is a trivial development in Middle-Indic, cf. von Hinüber 1986: 94. The consonantal group -pt- (normally > -tt- in Middle-Indic) was restored after the Sanskrit model. The assimilated form may be attested in . See also citraupte and wiryaupte.
