a1... having moved (?) the sky.
a1+We pay homage to you for having gone away from the house (wishing for) the rank of a Buddha ...
a2... we pay (respect) to you.
a2May you not forget us,
a2may you deliver us from all woes!
a2+... (God Brahmā), having looked (at the noble Metrak), says to God Indra:
a3See, Kauśika,
a3+very much now the noble Metrak ... has become to be seen similar to ...,
a4very well is he now equipped with the guise of a monk.
a4+|| God Indra says:
a5... having become filled with joy, he constantly says the praise of the noble Metrak,
a5+and constantly ...
a6+Thereupon, leaving out Paiṅgika, the fourteen brahmin youths, beginning with Ajita, ... altogether.
a7+They, out of love for the venerable noble Metrak and ... (with) the threefold refuge(-taking) ...
a8+... Paiṅgika, the brahmin youth, having attained the rank of a srotaāpanna (and having) respectfully (asked) the Buddha-god the teacher ... (he) is going to the Dakṣiṇāpatha.
b1Exit Paiṅgika.
b1+|| Thereupon, the venerable Buddha-god the teacher, (having called) ... beginning with the noble Metrak, ...
b2Good is your coming, oh monks!
b2Good is the going away from the house!
b2+Good is your obtaining ...
b3At some time, somewhere, like the Udumbara flower, the Buddha-god the teacher makes his appearance. ... if you have attained ...,
b4+be sure to have become those who have always accumulated virtue with body, word, and mind, oh monks!
b5... this way to the Nirvāṇa, oh sages!
b5Therefore go, you monks, ...
b5+(for) your own good ...
b6... I will [go and save] the adherents of the Vinaya, beginning with Urubilvā-Kāśyapa.
b6+That having been said, ...
b7... The second act (of the Maitreyasamiti-Nāṭaka) named Maitreya-pravrajana has come to an end.
b7+|| This book ... as fruit of merits ...
b8... may I for sure come together with the Buddha-god Metrak! ||

Commentary

Linguistic commentary

*The commentary is adapted from Ji et al. 1998: 142.
n10The forms TA kakmu, lantu, and kälpo are verbal nouns, not past participles; kāsu kakmu corresponds to Skt. svāgatam 'good coming'.

Parallel texts

*MaitrHami 2, 17

Remarks

*This fragment contains the end and colophon (in b7) of the second act of the Maitreyasamitināṭaka; an Uy. parallel is MaitrHami II, 17a1-b25. See also Pinault 1999: 195-6.
*This text continues from YQ II.14.
*The translation and the following commentary are adapted from Ji et al. 1998: 142.

Philological commentary

n1/// [k]la tk· ākāś\: this reading appears to be preferable to [r]utk(·) ākāś\ of Ji et al. 1998: 138. Possibly, this sequence is to interpreted as /// klä tka[ṃ] ākāś '... earth [and] sky.' (Peyrot 2013b: xx). Although Schmidt 1999b: 280 has correctly noted the difficulties with the reading, he leaves out the second akṣara completely in his own suggestion /// (ka)[k]la(ṃ) ākāś\.
n2ākāś is the last word of the first pāda of the second stanza of the type 4 x 18 (7/7/4). For wināsamäśśi etc. cf. the Uyghur text in the Turfan recension, Taf. 18, v. 14 fr. (Tekin 1980: 59) and in the Hami recension, MaitrHami 2, 17 a2ff.
n3Cf. MaitrHami 2, 17 a9-10.
n4Cf. MaitrHami 2, 17 a15-16.
n5The subject of träṅkäṣ is in the singular, whereas in the Uyghur version the praise to the noble Metrak is done by the divine beings in the sky, cf. MaitrHami 2, 17 a18-20, and in the Turfan recension, Taf. 19, r. 4-6 (Tekin 1980: 60).
n6Cf. MaitrHami 2, 17 a21ff.
n7śaraṇagamyo: for this expression, cf. YQ II.14: a8, and A 269 and 290: a6.
n8Cf. MaitrHami 2, 17 a27.
n9Cf. MaitrHami 2, 17 b1. The akṣara tka in tkäṣṣi had been left out by the scribe, and is written in smaller size beneath the line.
n11Cf. MaitrHami 2, 17 b13-14.
n12Cf. Turfan version, Taf. 19, v. 7 (Tekin 1980: 61).
n13Cf. MaitrHami 2, 17 b19-20.
n14Cf. MaitrHami 2, 17 b23-25.
n15For this syntagma (pñintwiss oko, pñintwāśśi oko), cf. A 13: b5, A 19: b2, A 65: a1.
