b2 | ... the kalpikāraka (monastery servant) Indriśke ... by whom is to be beaten ... in moral behaviour ... |
---|
The relationship with the following word is not clear. pyākäle '(is to) be beaten' can be read with relative certainty. For the preceding word, Couvreur reads ke[ś]\ 'number', which is agood option as far as the palaeography is concerned, but makes semantically little sense together with pyākäle. It must be admitted, however, that also ket 'whom; by whom'is dificult to understand. | |
For the last akṣara, which he reads as ‹m[i]›, Couvreur suggests that it is the abbreviation of a name, for instance Mitra. However, the i-diacritic would then have to be quite different from the other instances, which does not seem very likely. I therefore opt for ‹m[e]›. Instead of me, one could also read śm·, but then this akṣara would be placed much higher than the preceding ones. If it is only m, the vocalism could also be [ai]. | |
n1 | Following Couvreur 1970: 182, the first two words are probably a proper name, Indriśke (also attested GQo 1), and his title, kalpikāraka (monastery servant). It should be noted, however, that the akṣara ‹l[p]yā›, if it is so to be read, is not formed correctly, and that 'kalpikāraka' is normally kapyāre: the variant kalpyāre is so far attested only here. |
Contains the end of the Pravāraṇa-sūtra and the beginning of the Dhvajāgra-sūtra. | |
n2 | This scribbling is found under Skt. hartāraṃ sarvaśalyānāṃ vande 'I greet the remover of all thorns [of lust]' in the Pravāraṇa-sūtra Hartmann, forth.. The vowel diacritic i is formed with an extra loop; it is here transcribed as a short i. The interpretation of the scribbling is problematic; in any case, it can be excluded that it is a gloss translating the Sanskrit text directly above. |
