Commentary

Philological commentary

The last element b5x glosses Skt. [a]bhayāṃ 'unfearful, not dangerous' (Hartmann 1991). As the paper is severely abraded, this gloss is essentially illegible; only the r can be read with relative certainty. It is even uncertain whether the akṣara with r is preceded by one or rather by two other akṣaras.
n1glosses Skt. [ni]tyaṃ satatakāritā[ṃ] 'always a constant performance' (Hartmann 1991).
n3glosses Skt. cittaṃ 'mind' (Hartmann 1991). There is a large space between the two akṣaras and, probably, something in between is missing.
n4kakraupau glosses Skt. upa[c]ittaṃ 'gathered' (for upacitaṃ; Hartmann 1991, who notes that the second t may have been added later because the ink is fainter). The interpretation of the preceding gloss b3x·e – mp· as well as that of the damaged Sanskrit akṣaras is uncertain. b3ztu (ai)śamo (reading suggested by Georges-Jean Pinault - p.c.) glosses Skt. [t]at [prat]i[saṃ] 'this ...' (Hartmann 1991).

Linguistic commentary

n2The interpretation is unclear; [pa] would suggest [pa]«lsko» 'mind'.
n5tu (ai)śamo: It is likely that tu 'this' translates Skt. tat 'this', but the correspondence of the verbal roots is more difficult. The Tocharian word is probably a verbal adjective in -mo. The restoration to (ai)śamo 'knowing' is based on the assumption that the Sanskrit text has a form of pratisaṃvedin 'experiencing'.
